Speaker: Deborah Foote

Colorado Animal Emergency Mgmt. Program

TOPIC:

Animal issues in disasters are a substantial concern, impacting public health and safety, animal health and safety, our agricultural industry, our environment (wildlife) and our economy.  The Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation assists at-risk animals in Colorado during disasters through the CVMF Animal Emergency Management Program (AEMP). The program provides:

·        Unit coordination for Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps whose credentialed members are available to support local animal emergency response efforts, animal disease outbreaks and planned events with veterinary medical services, sheltering, animal evacuation and search and rescue.

·        Support of Community Animal Response Team development through the provision of technical assistance, resource development and training.

·        Support of ESF # 6A (Care of Companion and Service Animals) at the State Emergency Operations Center.

This presentation will discuss recent deployments in Colorado, the importance of animal preparedness efforts, and the evolution of animal disaster response to its current place in the emergency management system
