Topic: Improving outcomes after disaster: Innovative approaches
In your role, do you strive to improve outcomes for those affected by disaster? If so, this session is a must-attend. Decades of disaster experience have taught our speaker, Jolie Wills that if we seek to improve outcomes for those affected by disaster, we must ask three vital questions:
1) How do we empower those hit by disaster?
2) How do we prevent harm and burnout in the supporters?
3) How do we equip leaders with the learning from others who've faced similar post-disaster challenges?
Leave with key insights and practical resources you can apply in your role to answer these questions. Jolie and her team have spent the last decade learning from disasters and packaging the learning up into 'ready to apply' resources for disaster-affected people and those working to support them. You can expect this session to be 'out of the box' and invaluable if bettering outcomes for those hit by disaster is important to you.
Speaker: Jolie Wills - M.Sc. Cognitive Psychology
Over the last decade, Jolie Wills has conducted global research on key ingredients needed to support teams to thrive in difficult times. She is a cognitive scientist, psychosocial recovery expert and disaster survivor. Jolie combines storytelling,
science, research and most importantly the practical solutions because she knows what it's like to be deep in the post-disaster trenches with a great deal at stake. She has led teams in the most challenging of environments after disaster and disruption, including following the Christchurch Earthquakes in New Zealand.
Jolie has been awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship and an Edmund Hillary Fellowship. She is co-author of Leading in Disaster Recovery: A Companion Through the Chaos and is an advisor to the global Counter Terrorism Preparedness Network. Jolie is the co-founder and CEO of the Americas for Hummingly.
