January 2019 Chapter Meeting - New Techniques in DRBC Risk Assessment

If you are a DRBC professional, you may be one of those called upon by your organization – or by a client – to develop and maintain the threat and risk analyses on which your recovery plans are based.  If the organization is complex, or based in multiple states or countries, the list of risks may be so large as to be overwhelming.  In the 21st century, risks are moving at an escalating rate; and we need “risk awareness tools” to match that pace with timely business preparedness.  Traditional DRBC research methods require far more resources than most businesses are willing to commit.

Gerry Lockhart, Senior Consultant at Atlas Preparedness Group, is a DRBC expert and long-time ACP member.  He spoke to our chapter members at the January meeting about risk analysis and a tool his company has developed called StarFish.  This tool relies on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning to manage what humans cannot.  AI/Machine Learning is a computer performing thousands of searches 24*7*365, and those searches are constantly updated.  The results still require the knowledge and expertise of DRBC professionals to analyze the results and help organizations adjust their planning accordingly.

Gerry discussed examples where events were not predictable based on traditional risk analysis.  His company worked with an unprecedented hurricane in Ireland – yes, a hurricane – that was followed by drought!  They  also helped the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria and those dealing with the recent California fires that far exceeded what anyone could have imagined or prepared for.

Speaker:  Gerry Lockhart is a business continuity and IT disaster recovery expert with experience in numerous organizations spanning multiple industries. He has developed business continuity programs and disaster recovery plans for several international companies. Gerry’s work incorporates best practices, annual reviews, annual BC exercises, and employee training to develop a company-wide culture of resilience. Gerry has worked with multiple countries to ensure that the BCM program matches the country's regulatory requirements and the overall company objectives.
