Picture
The May meeting of the Colorado Rocky Mountain Chapter of ACP featured Ryan Broughton, Director of the Denver Office of Emergency Management. Ryan began by presenting a community profile that explains in detail the need for a well-planned, well-coordinated, and comprehensive approach to emergency management. For example:
  • Denver’s metro economy, similar to that of Greece, is $180 Billion
  • The area covered is 155 square miles, including 53 square miles of airport facilities and 14,000 acres of Mountain Parks
  • Denver is geographically isolated, being the largest city in a 500-mile radius with over 700,000 residents, 12% of the state’s population, and 67,500 businesses
  • The North Central All-Hazards Region is 61% of the state’s population, which is 87% urban and 13% rural
  • The city holds over 700 special events is public spaces
Ryan outlined the office’s scope, the complexity of managing multiple funding sources, and the OEM’s collaboration with other local, state, and Federal agencies.
